THE RUN:

A trail is laid by one or two of the Hashers (the Hare/s). The trail is
marked with chalk arrows, flour marks, shredded paper, pieces of
toilet paper, or other material in the hands of the hares depending
on the terrain and/or the hare. The trail can be pre-laid the day
before or begun just a few minutes ahead of the pack setting out
(this is called a live hare run).

At a given signal, (fifteen minutes after Hares-Away) the rest of
the hash, (the Hashers, Harriers, Harriettes, hounds or pack) set
off in pursuit of the trail. The idea is that the pack stays somewhat
together and this is achieved by setting false trails, back checks
and sneaky loops. The fitter front runners will often do twice as
much running as the more slothful members but will often finish the
run at the same time as the rest of the pack. The length and
difficulty of the run depends on the hare and the terrain.

THE CIRCLE:

Once the all the pack has reached the On-In, the Hashers
socialize, sing bawdy songs and most importantly, drink BEER, or
the beverage of your choice. Down downs are awarded for
misdemeanors real, imagined or blatantly made up and the
recipients will most likely have been lobbed in by their fellow
Hashers. Visitors are always given a Visitors Down-Down as are
"Virgins" (first time Hash runners) and anyone else who comes to
the attention of the committee. The ceremonies can last a couple
of minutes or half the night depending on the level of religious
fervor of the hash.

THE ON-AFTER:

The On-After is usually held either at a local Bar & Grill or at
someone's house if they are brave enough.

THE HASHER'S NICKNAME:

When a person is hashing for the first time they are called a
"Virgin" and will go by the name "Just (your first name)". Like Bob
will be called "Just Bob" until he acquires a Hash name. After a
person participates in a few hashing events, it is inevitable that
he/she will do something memorable or more likely, something
stupid.  In the spirit of camaraderie, that rest of the group will
award a Hash name to this lucky sap.  Thereafter, this name is
used at the Hash in place of his/her legal name. You will most
likely hear some funny and embarrassing names and most, but not
all, are pretty innocent in their origins. Just ask any Hasher how
they got their name and they will keep you entertained with their
stories behind them or they will keep you guessing to avoid the
embarrassment of telling you.

What kind of people come to the Hash.

People from all walks of life attend the Hash runs. The nice thing
about having hash names is being able to act stupid and not have
the real world know who you really are and post it on CNN.

I'm oversensitive and easily offended. Is Hashing right
for me?

You might want to join some knitting group or something more low
key and not something like this. Wrong Hole's mother likened this
as a big family that likes to have fun, get some exercise, and
similar to a fraternity that loves to drink beer.
